Small Business Awards Application Tips 2026

10 Tips from Past Winners & Judges to Strengthen Your Small Business Awards Application

Applying for the Loudoun Chamber Small Business Awards is an opportunity to showcase your business and the impact you’re making in our community. Here are ten of the top takeaways shared by past winners, finalists, and judges during our Small Business Awards Application Workshop.

  1. Apply! You Can’t Win If You’re Not in the Running
Many nominees never submit an application. Simply completing your application puts you in contention and gives your business valuable exposure and recognition.
  2. Answer the Question First
Judges score each question using a rubric. Be direct, answer exactly what’s being asked, and avoid adding information that doesn’t support your response.
  3. Back Up Your Story with Specific Results
Instead of saying you provide excellent customer service, prove it. Share measurable results like 5-star reviews, client retention rates, growth, volunteer hours, or other meaningful data.
  4. Show What Makes You Memorable
Think about what makes your business different. Include examples, accomplishments, or stories that help judges remember your application long after they’ve finished reading it.
  5. Highlight Your Impact in Loudoun County
These are Loudoun County awards. Show how your business contributes to the local community through service, partnerships, hiring, leadership, or volunteerism.
  6. Write for Someone Outside Your Industry
Avoid acronyms and technical jargon. Your judges may not be familiar with your field, so write in a way that’s clear and easy for anyone to understand.
  7. Make It Easy to Read
Keep your responses concise and well organized. Bullet points, short paragraphs, and clear formatting help judges quickly find the information they’re looking for.
  8. Create a Video That Shows Your Story
Follow the one-minute time limit and focus on showing, not just telling. Consider including your team, customers, products, workspace, or photos with voiceover to bring your business to life.
  9. Review Before You Submit
Set your application aside for a day if possible, then review it with fresh eyes. Ask someone else to proofread for clarity, grammar, broken links, and video quality.
  10. Think Beyond the Awards
The effort you put into your application isn’t wasted. Many applicants reuse their responses for marketing, grant applications, website copy, social media, and future award submissions.
