32nd Annual Loudoun Small Business Awards Finalist Spotlight: Serenity House
Thank you to Serenity House for sharing their story with us. Congratulations on being named a finalist in our Nonprofit category for the 32nd Annual Loudoun Small Business Awards!
Tell us the story of your organization and how it has evolved.
The story of Serenity House is one of personal tragedy transformed into community healing and hope. Established in 2018 by founder Melissa Hinton in memory of her sister Rachel, the organization was born out of a critical need for structured, local recovery support. What began as a compassionate vision backed by vital seed funding from 100 Women Strong and guidance from the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties—has rapidly evolved into Loudoun County’s premier recovery lifeline.
Key Milestones & Expansion:
- Transitional Recovery Housing (2020–2025): To bridge the gap after formal treatment, we opened Loudoun’s first sober living home for women in 2020, expanded to include a men’s home in 2021, and added a second women’s home in 2025—providing structured, affordable, and substance-free environments.
- Walk-In Recovery Community Center (2023): Located at 29 N. King Street in downtown Leesburg, this center serves as a vibrant community hub offering free certified peer recovery coaching, support groups (NA, SMART Recovery), financial literacy workshops, and family guidance.
- Collaborative Network & Warm Hand-Offs: While primarily serving adults, we act as a critical safety net for families of teens, coordinating direct, warm hand-offs to specialized partner providers to ensure no one is left behind.

What is your organization’s mission, and who do you serve?
Our Mission: To provide supportive, structured transitional housing and peer-driven advocacy for adults recovering from Substance Use Disorder, empowering them to rebuild their lives and achieve long-term sobriety.
Who We Serve: We serve adults (ages 18+) across Loudoun County and surrounding areas who are navigating the vulnerable transition from formal treatment back into society. We also serve the broader community by providing a vital safety net for families, friends, and employers impacted by a loved one’s addiction. As Loudoun County’s only non-profit combining free, peer-driven recovery mentoring with structured transitional housing, our unique model ensures that financial barriers never stand in the way of lifelong recovery.
What are you most proud of when it comes to your team, volunteers, or supporters?
We are most proud of our culture of lived experience. The vast majority of our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters bring their own personal journeys with substance use and recovery to the table. This is not just a job or a volunteer slot for our team—it is a calling. This shared understanding creates an environment of profound trust, deep accountability, and immediate connection for our participants. Our team serves as living proof to the Loudoun community that recovery is possible, sustainable, and transformative.

Walk-In Recovery Center
What impact are you most proud to have made in the Loudoun community?
We are incredibly proud to have touched thousands of lives across Loudoun County, directly reducing recidivism, preventing homelessness, and restoring families. By showing up publicly and professionally, we are actively dismantling the stigma of addiction and proving every day that Loudoun is “Recovery Strong.”
What Winning Would Mean?
Winning the Loudoun Small Business Award would be a monumental validation of recovery as a vital civic and economic priority. For our participants, it signals that their community stands with them. For our organization, this recognition from the Chamber would elevate our visibility, open doors to new corporate partnerships, and amplify our ability to secure the sustainable funding needed to keep our services free and accessible.
Who or what has had the greatest influence on your organization’s work?
The greatest influence on our work is the power of human connection and mutual vulnerability. Our model is deeply influenced by the philosophy that clinical treatment is only the first step; long-term recovery requires a supportive, substance-free ecosystem. We are continuously inspired by our participants who bravely choose growth over comfort every day, and by the collaborative spirit of Loudoun’s local non-profit network. It is this collective, compassionate community that influences us to turn grief into actionable, life-saving service.

What is something about your organization that people in Loudoun may not know?
Many people do not realize that we provide robust support for families, even if their loved one is not yet ready to accept help. Addiction is a family disease, and navigating it can be incredibly isolating. We offer free family coaching, resources, and best-practice guidance on how to set healthy boundaries and respond effectively when a loved one finally does reach out for help. Our doors are open to anyone impacted by addiction, our services are entirely free, and we flex to fit the demanding schedules of working families.
What is one way the community can support or get involved with your mission?
The community can champion our mission through three distinct avenues:
- Volunteer & Visit: We need community volunteers to support our major events throughout the year. We invite business leaders and residents to visit our downtown Leesburg hub to see our impact firsthand.
- Ambassadorship: Follow us on social media and spread the word. The more people who know we exist, the faster we can reach a neighbor, employee, or family member in crisis.
- Charitable Giving: As we strive to cement our footprint as a legacy non-profit in Loudoun County, financial investments from individuals and corporate partners are vital. Financial contributions directly fund our free peer-coaching hours and maintain our affordable transitional homes.
