“Turbulent, wildly colorful and exploding with life” are the Washington Post’s description of Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst which opens the concert. The program continues with Night Ride and Sunrise, a rare work by Sibelius which is the essence of romanticism – a blend of folklore, nature and fantasy. Dances in the Canebrakes by Florence Price rounds out the first half of the concert, one of the last compositions by the first black female composer to have her music played by a major American orchestra. The show concludes with Tchaikovsky’s beloved work, Symphony No. 4. From the “call of fate” and fever dreams of the first movement to the “faux-carnival-meets-folksong” fourth movement, this classic delivers a feeling as poignant today as it was a century ago.

This program is conducted by Dr. Zeke Fetrow, a finalist for the LSO conductor position.

Doors open at 7 PM and seating is open.

Program includes:

  • Jessie Montgomery: Starburst
  • Florence Price: Dances in the Canebrakes
  • Jean Sibelius: Night Ride and Sunrise, op. 55
  • Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4
