 Loudoun Green Business Challenge  

 

Over 60 local businesses and organizations completed the 2011 Loudoun County Green Business Challenge which was designed to encourage participating businesses to increase operational efficiency and reduce their overall carbon footprint.

 

The Green Business Challenge is a partnership between the Loudoun County Government and the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce to encourage Loudoun businesses to adopt environmentally sound business practices. Last year, the inaugural Challenge attracted more than three dozen area businesses, which were ranked for their environmental practices through a Green Business Challenge Scorecard. Winners were announced in three categories, for small, medium and large businesses. While the 2011 Challenge Scorecard covers many of the same topic areas as the 2010 version, the categories have been simplified to make the system more user-friendly.

 

Actions taken by businesses participating in the 2011 Challenge included conducting office-wide energy audits, having employees turn off lights and computers when not in use, purchasing recycled paper products and adopting formal telework policies.

 

The top award winners, those achieving the highest marks on the

Green Challenge scorecards, were:

• Potomac Falls Express Lube and Car Wash, small business category

• Southland Industries, medium size business category

• Raytheon, large business category

The Innovation Award was presented to Purcellville's Catoctin Creek Distillery
