Spotlight on the Finalist: Justin Dobson, Comfenergy

Thank you to Justin Dobson, co-owner of Comfenergy, for answering a few questions with us! Congratulations on both of your nominations!

1.  What would it mean to you and your company to win a Small Business Award?

I feel that winning the service business of the year award would mean the World to not only to the Comfenergy team, but myself personally.  Our team has worked very hard from top to bottom to become the best at what we call WOW service.  Being rewarded for that would be amazing to share with our team, our customers, and the public of course. Personally, it would be very rewarding to have won this award as I have previously won this award with another company back in 2009.  This time around would be “twice as nice”.

2.  What business person has influenced you the most?

My business partner John LeVan has influenced me the most.  Both of us have run businesses in the past, but I have never met anyone as smart and business savvy as John.  He is a very critical thinker, and has passed this on to me.  Before I met John I was a very emotional decision maker. John has the ability to see every angle and side of decision before it has been made.  He’s also one of the hardest working persons I have ever met.

3.  If you weren’t running your own business, what would you be doing?

If I weren’t running my own business I would be coaching baseball.  Baseball is something that I had played since I could walk, and I stopped playing about 5 years ago because I was concentrating on starting and running Comfenergy.  I would love to get Comfenergy to be self sufficient enough to some day pass my baseball knowledge on to others.

4.  What book are you reading right now?

I really don’t read.  I know that is something that may surprise some people, but I don’t find reading pleasurable.  I’d rather be outdoors, watching sports, or watching a movie.  I can’t sit still long enough to read I guess.

5.  What is your favorite app?

My favorite app is Facebook. I keep track of all of my friends and what they are doing. Facebook has allowed me to keep in touch with many people I would have lost touch with long ago, and I value friendships tremendously. Comfenergy also uses Facebook to obtain a ton of business.  If you use it properly it a great marketing tool for your business!

6.  If you had a full 24 hours off, and your family was out of town, what would you do?

If I has 24 hours away from family I would probably work around the yard. I enjoy working around our 10 acre property in Lucketts. Cutting trees for firewood, mowing, or anything else while listening to the radio.  I would also take advantage of the alone time to play drums.  I can put on a set of headphones and blast away on the drums for hours at a time.

7.  What is the smallest thing that has had the largest impact on your business?

The smallest thing I have learned that has had the most impact is to get out of my own way when it comes to business.  You are your own limiter.  Learn to let go of duties to others, teach them, and watch the business grow!
